Today’s game began at 3pm at home in freezing conditions. Liz had kindly volunteered to reserve in the absence of one of our usual players, Sarah. I think Liz was hoping to play in an emergency only, and today was definitely an emergency in the end...
We started the game with the remaining regular 7 players and from the start it was obvious that we had a tough opposition. Their GK was deceivingly agile and as a team they marked well and made it very difficult for us to find space to move into. They converted their shots well and unusually are shooting accuracy was poor.
Near to the beginning of the second quarter, Tracy (GA) was forced to leave the court with a knee problem, which forced Liz to take to the court at Centre. Mel then moved to replace Tracey at GA. To add more pressure to the attacking end, Fran (GS) then developed a neck injury, but thankfully she soldiered on to the end of the game.
Liz’s experience and calm head ensured that we did not deteriorate further but despite the occasional surge, we never really challenged them to win the game, losing finally by 10 goals.
This was our first defeat of the season, and it was very difficult to accept, but unfortunately against tough opposition, our performance was not good enough, but at least we will get another chance to improve in 2009.
